Glasgow City Council Welcome to Shawlands Academy

Rapid Response Engineering Day
The recent Rapid Response Engineering learning program was a cross curricular project designed to promote engineering as a future career choice. All subjects taught material over a two week period linked to an imaginary hurricane which had devastated an area of Central America. Lessons developed pupil knowledge about the history and geography of this region and the potential logistical difficuties resulting from a disaster of this kind. Topics included the spread of disease, the supply of fresh water, rebuilding and reconstruction costs.

The skills developed included mapping reading, food preparation, numeracy and Spanish language skills. The project concluded with an activity day held at the end of the two week teaching block. S1 pupils were briefed on the disaster and split into teams to develop solutions using teamwork. The challenges included supplying water purification, food preparation, building emergency shelters, orienteering across open ground and devising a water transfer system.
