DoE Silver Expedition 2013

Duke of Edinburgh Sliver Expedition

During October, six of our senior pupils completed their Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award expedition on the Isle of Arran.

There are four sections in the Silver level award.

With assistance from adult leaders, participants plan and execute objectives in each of the following areas:

  • Expedition: planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad. The Expedition section involves planning, training for and doing a 3 day (2 night) expedition.
  • Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or within the community.
  • Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities.
  • Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests.

It takes each participant at least 6 months to complete their Silver DofE programme if they have already achieved a Bronze Award, and, at least 12 months to complete the Silver without a Bronze Award.

The Expedition is a considerable physical and mental challenge set against the rugged beauty of one of Scotland’s largest islands (with an area of 167 square miles). It involves accurate map reading and compass skills, teamwork and communication.

Well Done to Ethan Paterson, Fergus Brown, Euan Munro, Callum Mackey, Rebecca Boyle and Holly Hepburn. Our thanks to our expedition leader, Mr MacBride.
