Glasgow City Council Welcome to Shawlands Academy

Visit to Whitelee Windfarm

S1 and S2 Eco Schools pupils recently visited Whitelee Wind Farm. This visit enabled pupils to learn more about sustainable energy production and how it relates to their lives as Global Citizens. Our pupils learned about Renewable energy from staff at the windfarm.

Renewable energy is important as it does not create greenhouse gas. This means that it is environmentally friendly and helps to reduce pollution whilst minimising the effects of climate change.

Whitelee Windfarm is Europe’s largest windfarm. It is located on Eaglesham Moor, about eight miles from Shawlands Academy. The £300m windfarm has 140 turbines which can generate 322MW of electricity, enough to power 180,000 homes.

Whitelee's turbines can each produce enough electricity to power the equivalent of over 1,000 homes. Each turbine has a generating capacity of 2.3 megawatts.  The turbines are 110 metres tall and at their fastest, the turbine blades can turn at 160mph.

Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Whitelee – a great learning experience!
